Contra Dancing (and much more) in Monterey, California

From time to time, MCDC supports house concerts for those musicians traveling through the Monterey area who have a connection to contra dancing.  These house concerts offer musicians the opportunity to perform a wider spectrum of material — while attendees have the chance to enjoy great live, acoustic music.

We have 2 upcoming house concerts:

Friday, April 15th — The Nettles

Join us in a Monterey/Salinas setting on Friday, April 15th to hear
The Nettles
Eclectic. Celtic. Folkadelic. From Irish and international music to American oldtime to rock music, The Nettles put it all through their folkadelic kaleidoscope.

Celtic music that’s progressive, exciting and a little bit dangerous. This band ignites audiences with fiery music that blends traditional music with modern spices. The Nettles play improvisational music based on traditional tunes, a Celtic jam band that makes audiences move and groove.

The Nettles blend traditional Irish and American music with modern spices. Laura Brophy’s powerful fiddling forms strong yet lyrical melodies, punctuated by wild improvisation. The Nettles are propelled by the might rhythm engine of Kevin Johnsrude on guitar, Michael Proctor on bass and drummer Brian Bucolo.

Their music retains the driving energy of its roots, but The Nettles’ unique interpretations add new excitement to the tradition with every performance.

Joyrideis a contra dance band of friends from Portland, Oregon, known for tight ensemble work, skilled play, inventively arranged tunesets and fun energy — featuring great melodies and harmonies over strong, sweet rhythms.

George Penk’s propulsive, soaring fiddle joins Erik Weberg’s deft flute, harmonica and Bombarde, with Sue Songer’s heartbeat piano and Jeff Kerssen-Griep’s muscular guitar and percussion. Joyride plays dance tunes from the British Isles, New England, Appalachia and French Canada, as well as close to home and surprising points beyond.
